"Dogs have given us their absolute all. We are the center of their universe, we are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made."

Counselling for adults

In the presence of a dog, research has shown that human stress hormones drop and social hormones rise. This in turn leads to lower blood pressure and heart rate which reduces physical feelings of anxiety and stress. Dogs can only be authentic in how they express themselves. They are non-judgmental and they provide a soothing tactile experience. Hence counselling with a dog in the room can help make the individual feel more at ease. The dog facilitates rapport between the individual and the therapist and can help individuals explore issues and reflect on relationships. Being in the presence of a relaxed animal can make an individual feel safe and relaxed enough to open up and begin to make changes.

Sometmes kids are fearful of animals, including dogs. A gentle and gradual exposure towards being with a real live dog (graded exposure) is an evidence-based treatment to help children with this issue.
